Senior Tax Specialist

We are currently seeking an energetic Senior Tax Specialist to join our dynamic accounting and financial reporting function. This individual will be responsible for managing all tax aspects of the Axiom Zen group of companies, including but not limited to, ensuring timely and accurate global tax compliance, implementing tax strategies (e.g., transfer pricing) and ensuring compliance, preparing tax provision working papers to support year end processes and managing any communications with Canadian and US tax authorities, identifying and implementing domestic and international tax planning opportunities, preparing and reviewing working papers to support tax incentive claims (e.g., SR&ED), serving as a tax strategy lead to all members of the business, and managing relationships with key financial service providers as required to support the tax function. This role is key to building the overall tax strategy, identifying and mitigating tax risks through careful planning, and drives the accuracy and timeliness of the Company’s tax filings across all jurisdictions where Axiom Zen does business.

Together, we will build out robust and scalable processes and workflows from which Axiom Zen can optimize the growth and development of its existing portfolio, while augmenting the foundation from which we will launch the next wave of leading technology companies.
What we’ll accomplish together:
  • Work closely with leadership to deeply understand the business and build a strong and durable tax strategy.
  • Lead on implementation of the tax planning strategies and partner closely with the product teams and the finance org to have full ownership and responsibility.
  • Work with the finance leadership team to build out the tax team, as needed.
  • Communicate technical tax issues clearly to business leaders and work effectively across all levels of internal process owners and external advisors.
  • Monitor tax compliance calendar to proactively track all tax filing requirements, deadlines, and payments for the Axiom Zen group of companies.
  • Prepare and review working papers to support Canadian and US corporate tax returns and ancillary forms. Manage tax service providers to ensure compliance and timely filings. 
  • Oversee the compliance process for indirect tax including sales and use tax (US & worldwide, including marketplace facilitator requirements), GST, PST, and other related filings.
  • Manage external and regulatory audits and examinations as required and ensure robust audit documentation is available. 
  • Assess and optimize positions around key opportunities (e.g., preparation and review SR&ED) and corporate requirements (e.g., transfer pricing approach and support) and direct external advisors accordingly.
  • Perform tax research on innovative new areas - e.g., for blockchain & cryptocurrency transactions - and stay up to date on developments and changes in tax laws and tax accounting guidance.
A little about you:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Business Administration or a related field.
  • CPA or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 5 years experience including managing Canadian and US tax compliance, transfer pricing, indirect and consumption taxes, SR&ED, cross border tax planning, and accounting for deferred income taxes.
  • Experience with tax implementation projects for high-growth, high transaction volume companies is a strong plus.
  • Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; communicates in a clear, concise and organized manner; listens to others to obtain information.
  • Proven experience building strong relationships with senior management, external service providers, business partners, etc.
  • Demonstrated success in environments that require managing ambiguity and multiple deadlines among various stakeholders and can quickly adapt to changing priorities.
  • Solid proficiency in MS Office Suite (particularly in Excel) and Google Suite.
  • You are excited about emerging technology like blockchain / cryptocurrency, SaaS, mobile apps, AI, and machine learning.
  • You understand that technology companies move fast and that leaders need accurate and timely data to inform decision making. You have a hyper-focused attention to detail, with high intrinsic motivation to get to the correct answer to satisfy your own curiosity.
